Jannatul Baqi: Madinah’s historic cemetery

Beside Masjid an-Nabawi lies Jannatul Baqi (Al-Baqi), one of the most significant burial grounds in Islamic history. This cemetery is associated with many of the Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ companions, family members and generations of Muslims.

Why is Jannatul Baqi important?

Al-Baqi is a place of remembrance and reflection, not a conventional tourist attraction. Its significance comes from its connection to the earliest Muslim community and Islamic teachings about remembering the Hereafter.

Who is buried there?

Historical accounts associate Al-Baqi with Uthman ibn Affan, the third rightly guided caliph, and several members of the Prophet’s family, including Al-Hasan ibn Ali, as well as a number of the Prophet’s wives. Accounts of individual burial sites vary, and visitors should not expect named grave markers or rely on online maps claiming to pinpoint every grave.

Where is Jannatul Baqi?

The cemetery is located next to the eastern side of Masjid an-Nabawi in central Madinah. Visitors should follow the current pedestrian routes, security instructions and any crowd-management measures. Access times and restrictions can change.

Etiquette for visitors

  • Dress modestly, remain quiet and respect families attending funerals.
  • Do not step or sit on graves, obstruct pathways or push through crowds.
  • Offer greetings and prayers for the deceased in accordance with your religious guidance.
  • Direct supplication to Allah rather than to those buried.
  • Observe all restrictions on photography, filming and access.

Can everyone enter?

Entry is subject to local rules and operating arrangements. There are differing scholarly views regarding women visiting cemeteries; consult a qualified scholar for religious guidance and the local authorities for current access rules. Do not assume entry is guaranteed.

Is Jannatul Baqi the same as Riyaz ul Jannah?

No. Riyaz ul Jannah (Rawdah) is a prayer area within Masjid an-Nabawi. Jannatul Baqi is the cemetery beside the mosque. A Rawdah booking does not itself confer cemetery access. Read our Riyaz ul Jannah appointment guide for separate Nusuk planning.

Planning your visit

Allow time for prayer at the Prophet’s Mosque, rest and transport. For a broader introduction to the city, see our Madinah destination guide and the Madinah Loop experience. Confirm whether a guided tour includes an external explanation of Al-Baqi or an actual cemetery visit.
